Kwame Ato Asare Ani, who was recently declared wanted by the Ghana Police Service, has spoken out from his hiding place about the circumstances surrounding his standoff with police officers. Ani refutes the accusation that he is an armed robber, claiming instead to be an informant to the police in the Axim area.
During an exclusive interview with Kevin Taylor on Loud Silence TV, Ani revealed that he has been working as an informant for the police for over a year. He acted as a liaison between the police and illegal miners in the area, collecting money from them on behalf of the police.
Additionally, he and his gang provided security and fought criminals in the area with the approval of the police.
However, Ani explained that his fallout with the police occurred after he was paid GHC100, 000.00 by some illegal miners but failed to deliver the money to the police.
He felt cheated by the police in previous deals and refused to hand over the money, which led to the police accusing him of being a robber.
Ani insisted that he is not a robber, and no one can prove that he has ever stolen from any site. The police are only accusing him because he failed to deliver the GHC100, 000.00. Ani claims that the police would often come to his house up to five times a day to collect money from him, and sometimes they would not leave until they saw him.
The police service released a statement claiming that it arrested four men on March 28, including Kwame Asare, after the Axim Divisional Police Patrol Team reported an attack on them by a gang. The police also conducted a search at Ani’s residence, where they retrieved weapons and other items.
The police claim that Ani is still on the run and is the prime suspect in the attack on the police officers. The statement added that the police became aware of a video showing the confrontation between some police officers and the supposed leader of the gang.
