The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been recognized as a titled chief of the Awudome Traditional Area in the Volta region. The Chiefs and people of Awudome Traditional Area presented the Speaker to the Parliamentary Board as Togbe Nutefeworla I at a ceremony held on Monday, March 27, 2023.
This title is one of the highest honours in the area and was bestowed upon the Speaker in recognition of his good leadership of the House and integrity.
The enstoolment ceremony was attended by the Paramount Chief of the Awudome Traditional Area, Togbega Addai Kwesi Djanie XIII, who called on the House to accord the Speaker all the courtesies deserving of a chief.
Speaking at the ceremony, he highlighted the Speaker’s political career and expressed satisfaction with his regard for integrity.
The Awudome Traditional Council decided to build an everlasting relationship with the Speaker, his character, and his principles, culminating in his installation as a chief with the title Togbe Nutefeworla I.
In response, the Speaker expressed his appreciation to the people of Awudome and pledged to continue to be impartial in the exercise of his duty.
He emphasized the importance of the honor done him, acknowledging that the recognition of him as a King of Integrity was a serious matter.
He reiterated his commitment to uphold impartiality and to ensure that the institution of Parliament holds the executive arm of government accountable for the money and resources entrusted in their hands.
The Speaker also expressed his support for a hung parliament and a minority government, citing their importance in holding the executive accountable.
He believes that such a government will help put failing governments on their toes and ensure that they are held accountable for their actions.
The ceremony marked the formal recognition of the Speaker as a titled chief of the Awudome Traditional Area. The special ceremony to introduce him to the general public is expected to take place later.
