A secondary school located in the western part of Kenya has been shut down indefinitely following the death of two students, suspected to have been caused by food and water poisoning.
The Mukumu Girls High School, situated in Kakamega county, was closed by public health officials on Monday after more than 100 students were hospitalized the previous week with symptoms of abdominal pains and diarrhea.
Reports suggest that preliminary investigations indicate that the students may have consumed contaminated food or water. Samples have been collected and forwarded to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) for analysis.
As news of the two fatalities spread, parents rushed to the school to retrieve their children.
